Americans and their burgers! I had a few brief visits to the states and the only thing I wanted to taste was their burgers. Still high on my bucket list is a road trip through different states where I get to taste their best greasy joints. Somehow, over the last couple of years, burgers have become a hype all over the world. A dish that is typically associated with fast-food chains from America has now become a trendy food where the creativity knows no limit. In honor of this great dish, I decided to present you with our classic. It is from this classic recipe that we are able to create much better dishes.

  • 500 gr ground beef (good quality)
  • 1 tsp red chilli flakes
  • 2 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp paprika powder
  • 1.5 tsp cumin powder
  • 50 gr breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 3 sweet soy sauce
  • 1 dash lime juice
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • olive oil
Caramelized onion
  • 1 large onion in half rings
  • olive oil
  • sea salt
Lemon-Dijon mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 5 tsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
Other ingrediënts:
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 3 hand lettuce
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • 6 pickles sliced in half lengthwise
  1. Place the ground beef in a large bowl and add all the spices and massage it gently till all the spices are well incorporated. Place the bowl in the fridge to let it rest. The longer you can place it the better (max 12hrs).

  2. In the meantime mix all the ingredients for the sauce.

  3. After the meat is done resting take it out of the fridge and add the eggs and breadcrumbs and mix well. Form 4 patties but be sure to not press it too hard, because it will damage the texture of the hamburgers.

  4. Pour some olive oil in a grill pan. When the oil is really hot then the burgers are ready to be cooked. Cook them first on high heat on both sided till the outside is crusty (about 2 minutes each side). Turn the heat down to medium and cook the patties medium-rare for more 2 minutes on both sides. While the patties are cooking start with the onions.

  5. In a hot frying pan without oil cook the onions till dark but not burned. The darker you cook it the better. Next, pour some olive oil and a pinch of salt. Sauté the onion till their a bit soft (don’t loose all the crunch).

  6. Transfer the patties to a plate and place the cheddar cheese on top of the patties. Slice the bread and grill the inside shortly.

  7. Layer the buns with a bulb of sauce, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Place then the burgers, the onions and again a bit of sauce.
